Anthem: Exploring identity and place with poetry – March/April 2019

A Brent Borough of Culture project

Anthem is a new project as part of Brent Borough of Culture. The project aims to engage the young people of Brent in creating an anthem for the borough; reflecting the communities, values and experiences of this special part of North West London.

The Brent anthem will be composed by musician and Brent-native, Lily Allen, ensuring the finished piece reflects the youth and diversity of our borough.

Brent River College has been lucky enough to be a part of the Anthem project with poetry workshops being delivered at both KS3 & KS4. Students enjoyed the workshops, they were fully involved in the activities on offer and they embraced and celebrated being the young people of Brent! They were able to identify what they love about Brent and why growing up in Brent is something to be proud of. Both sets of students managed to create a lovely poem by the end of the workshop.

The KS4 poem is featured below –

I pledge allegiance to the people of Brent

I pledge allegiance to my family and friends

I pledge allegiance to the people we have lost

I pledge allegiance to the food we eat

I pledge allegiance to our GPS

I pledge allegiance to our community

I pledge allegiance to all my Jamaicans and Punjabis

I pledge allegiance to our borough

Our borough brings the community together

I pledge allegiance to all the cultures we embrace

Black, white, Asian and mixed race

South Americans, Africans too

I pledge allegiance to us, to me, to you….
